Case Study 2: Homeopathic Management of Chronic Eczema Using Maq’s Triad Protocol

Patient Profile:

  • Gender: Male
  • Age: 48
  • Initial Consultation: 22nd July 2024
  • Follow-Up Consultation: 18th August 2024
  • Medical History: Rheumatoid arthritis treated with steroid injections.
  • Condition: Chronic eczema on both legs with white scaling, flare-ups, and scratching-induced bleeding.

Symptoms and Observations:
The patient presented with chronic eczema characterized by white scaling, flare-ups, and bleeding due to intense scratching. Past treatments for rheumatoid arthritis, including steroid injections, had not fully resolved his eczema, and the condition persisted. The eczema was primarily located on both legs, where the skin appeared thickened and inflamed. The patient reported severe itching, especially at night, which exacerbated the bleeding and prevented proper healing.

Homeopathic Approach:
Based on the patient’s symptoms, the following remedies were selected:

  1. Arsenicum Album 1M: This remedy was chosen due to its well-documented association with dry, itchy, and scaly skin conditions, particularly those that worsen at night. The remedy is known for its effectiveness in cases where the skin feels hot and burning, especially when scratching leads to bleeding. Additionally, Arsenicum Album is indicated in cases where the patient experiences restlessness and anxiety regarding their condition.
  2. Psorinum 200C: Psorinum was selected because of its strong association with chronic skin conditions where eruptions are suppressed, leaving the patient feeling generally weak and despondent. Psorinum is particularly suited for cases of eczema that do not respond to conventional therapies, especially when there is a history of skin issues being suppressed by external treatments. This remedy helps address the underlying chronic state that may be contributing to the skin condition.
  3. Mezereum 30C: Mezereum was prescribed due to its effectiveness in managing intense itching, burning, and the presence of thick crusts or scales on the skin. This remedy is especially helpful in cases where scratching causes significant discomfort and worsens the condition. Mezereum addresses the deep-seated itching and the tendency for skin eruptions to become inflamed or infected.

Administration:

  • Arsenicum Album 1M: One dose administered monthly.
  • Psorinum 200C: One dose administered weekly.
  • Mezereum 30C: Administered three times daily.

To avoid potential interactions, no two remedies were taken on the same day, allowing each remedy to have its maximum intended effect.

Follow-Up (18th August 2024):
During the second consultation, the patient reported notable improvements:

  • The wounds had healed significantly.
  • No new flare-ups were observed.
  • Occasional mild itching persisted but was not severe enough to cause bleeding or discomfort.

Given the improvement, it was advised that the patient continues the current regimen for another four weeks.
